I decided to use Quartz composer out of pure curiosity. I knew that it is a powerful program and that many people use it for live video mixing so it would probably work for the ethereal effect I wanted to create.
Above is the first patch I made in Quartz Composer. I used the template for creating a graphic animation. Below is a screen capture of the result:
